Overview
Professional Activities
The activities of this council include the initiation of discussions on curriculum issues, active assistance in the establishment of regional councils, promotion of in-service sessions to improve social studies education throughout the province, and resource people upon request.
Publications
The publications of the ATA Social Studies Council are provided to share information on classroom practice, current research in the field and social studies news. The Council produces two publications:
Regional Councils
Much of the work of the Social Studies Council is done at the regional level. As a member of the provincial council, you are automatically a member of a regional. Currently, our regional councils are:
Annual Conferences
A major Council event each year is the annual conference, held in October. Well-known keynote speakers and a variety of workshop leaders provides stimulation, incentive and classroom tips to conference delegates. The opportunity for interaction with colleagues is a prime goal of the conference. The annual meeting forms part of the agenda. Click here for more information about our conference.
Representation
The Council encourages liaison between social studies teachers and others interested in this field of practice. Representations are made to Alberta Learning on behalf of the membership concerning developments in social studies.
